Summer Servant Ministry Opportunities 2014

Second Year Joint Outreach and Mission Summer Event

For those wishing to participate in a local mission and outreach event, please mark your calendars for August 11-15.  Following last summer’s wonderfully successful “pilot project” of joining our mission and local outreach ministries, we are offering another opportunity to serve each day during the week in local agencies, Virginia Supportive Housing and Project:Homes. Those working at VSH, will help residents (formerly homeless men and women and those with physical and mental disabilities) clean and de-clutter their apartments; those serving at Project:Homes will help with home and yard repair and clean-up for a low-income senior citizen. After each day’s work we will gather for fellowship, reflection, and dinner!   Cost per participant is $100; check made payable to St. James’s Episcopal, marked “outreach-mission” and return to Carmen or me.  We look forward to having you join our lay leaders, Kyle Martin and Andy Smith! For those who have questions or who are interested in joining this year’s teams, please contact us – or

Hilliard House Advocacy Team

Hilliard House is “a program that assists homeless women and their children to build their capacity to live productively within the community.” On August 20 from 6:15-7:30 p.m. St. James’s will host approximately 29 families that include 41 kids ages 2+. While the mothers of Hilliard House participate in a round table discussion to write a code of ethics document for the transitional home, St. James’s volunteers will spend time with the children working with arts and crafts or playing outside. Roughly 20 volunteers are needed and all members of the family are invited! For questions or to sign up, please contact Laura Garden at or 540-556-6300.

ElderFriendsMaking Friends with Seniors

ElderFriends, a program of Family Lifeline is about connecting home-bound seniors with a friend. A key goal of the program is to avoid the social and health consequences of loneliness and isolation.  Would you be interested in making a difference in a senior’s life by developing a friendship with an isolated and perhaps lonely elder?

Elderfriends offers a special opportunity for outreach ministry to senior citizens.  You can team up with a friend and take turns doing the regular visiting and calling. If you are interested in becoming part of this ministry, please contact me ( ext.333) and I will be happy to answer your questions and connect you to the staff of Elderfriends.

Food Distribution Program at Peter Paul Development Center

Peter Paul Development Center’s food distribution program, in partnership with the Central Virginia Food Bank, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and other partners, provides food to residents of Richmond’s East End community twice a month. Volunteers are needed on the first and third Wednesday of each month 8-11:30am.  The distribution point is St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (1719 North 22nd St.) which is across the street from the Center.  More than 100 households receive food at each distribution event.

Volunteers assist with registration, sorting of food items, and distribution on the day of the program.  In addition, drivers are needed to assist in picking up produce as it becomes available. Drivers serve on an “as needed” basis prior to distribution. With parental guidance, middle age and older children are invited to assist.

If interested in becoming part of this ministry team, please contact Nancy Warman (nwarman@doer’ or Rosemary Jones, PPDC Volunteer Coordinator (

Mission to Our Little Roses in Honduras

July 7-14, 2014 Our longest running mission continues to flourish in this country with one of the poorest economies in Central America. Over the past two decades, we have built many meaningful relationships with friends at Our Little Roses Home for Girls in San Pedro Sula, and we are very excited to be returning again this year.
