Mentoring in City Schools

Volunteers at Bellevue Elementary School are part of our “Doer” team that meets together twice a month serving as “lunch buddies” for first grade students. “Reading buddies” meet an hour per week with two students and use a packet of pre-scribed reading activities to engage students. Hospitality volunteers prepare and serve a simple breakfast at the end of the year to honor teachers. Other volunteers serve as mentors and classroom or administrative assistants at the Peter Paul Development Center, Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School, and/or other city schools.

Peter Paul Development Center

An outreach and community center serving Church Hill and neighboring communities in Richmond’s East End, its mission is to build a community of learners by engaging and challenging children, families, and seniors. This is accomplished through programs that enhance academic achievement, provide cultural enrichment and promote self-esteem and lifelong self-sufficiency. Many volunteer opportunities are available for working with both children and seniors.

Anna Julia Cooper School

Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School is an independent, faith-based middle school for students of limited resources primarily from Richmond’s East End neighborhood. All students receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend. Volunteers serve as tutors, classroom volunteers, chaperones, and mentors. We also welcome help from those who are able to do maintenance work.
