Cradle to Grave: Lifelong Growth in Christ

Wednesdays in October, 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Valentine Hall

In our baptismal rite, we pledge to “grow into the full stature of Christ.” That’s quite a tall order, yet it’s the spiritual goal we are called to strive towards throughout our entire lives — with God’s help! What spiritual tools, learning techniques, and prayer methods are most appropriate at different stages of life? Come to learn from a variety of experts in the field as we explore this question for children, youth, and adults.

October 3

Introduction to Lifelong Growth in Christ with Dr. Cindy L. Kissel-Ito, Associate Professor of Christian Education and Director of the Master of Arts in Christian Education Program at Union Presbyterian Seminary

What does lifelong growth in Christ look like? When does it begin, and how can the local parish facilitate and support lifelong engagement and curiosity in faith and spirituality? What are barriers to spiritual and religious growth? What are the fruits of such engagement and growth? You are invited to this important discussion and interaction.

Adults engage with faith differently, but we all have the same deep desire to grow towards and with Jesus. What are key ways for adults to continue learning and growing through the different stages of adulthood? What elements are important to developing an ongoing and lasting relationship with God and the Church, whether in the church walls, in the community, or at home?

October 24

Bags: Helping Your Kids Lighten the Load with Chris Sasser, Lead Consultant for Ministry Architects and Director of Student Ministries at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, North Carolina

Learn practical tips for avoiding well-intentioned parenting pitfalls. Join Chris Sasser as we explore proactive methods for preventing spiritual and emotional “baggage,” which often manifests later in young adults as depression and anxiety.

The Poetry of Advent and Christmas

Wednesdays, November 30, December 5 & December 12, 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Valentine Hall

“In the beginning was the Word…” So begins the Gospel according to John, urging us to pay close attention to the gift of Word in this season of expectation and incarnation. Join our clergy in an exploration of seasonal poetry. We’ll tease out the mystery and meaning of favorite carols’ lyrics, look at the works of Anglican Divines like T.S. Eliot, and perhaps even write some of our own verses. You won’t want to miss it.
